Each month, we'll be hosting an interview with one of Launch22's many brilliant and inspiring members. We'll be asking them about their business, their ideas and their philosophies with a focus on the theme of entrepreneurship. So, without further ado, allow us to introduce Sam (Founder) and Adam, (App Developer) at Log my Care.
SO...WHAT IS LOG MY CARE?
Sam: Log my Care is a care management system for carers. It’s a way for care homes to manage all the information about their residents in one digital place, in an app. The app lets them see all the information they need about the residents they look after, as well as being able to record what they are doing for those people.
HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA?
Sam: I was already working with the care home industry and saw that most people were struggling with paperwork and missing out on the benefits of technology. I thought that what was needed was something accessible and really easy to use so I went out and started myself!
WHAT ARE YOUR BACKGROUNDS?
Adam: We met at Oxford University, 10 years ago. We were on the same course, our rooms were next door to each other and inevitably, we became friends! I became a software engineer and spent the last 4 years working for a tech company.
Sam: I went into strategy consulting for a number of years and then into the investment side. Afterwards, I shifted to software startups and then started the business about a year and a half ago. And six months ago, I got Adam involved.
CAN YOU GIVE US SOME INSIGHT INTO WORKING FOR A STARTUP?
Sam: I work as hard or harder than any previous job I’ve had. It’s quite an emotional roller coaster but, obviously, we have a complete say on what we do and the direction we go in. We are in a small team where everyone’s opinions matter. It feels super agile, you don’t have any of the corporate rules, you don’t care about booking holidays, you just take them when you need them, and you can use your time quite flexibly.
Adam: It’s been stressful but I think we’re starting to find our feet and getting used to this lifestyle.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES?
Adam: There are so many things to focus on and so many issues that are urgent and it’s difficult to know how to prioritise and which ones to work on each day. You don’t have enough time to do all, hence, you need to choose and that’s hard.
Sam: Following on from what Adam said, we try splitting roles as clearly as we can and own problems ourselves. We help each other out with decision making but we don’t both need to get drawn into the details of everything. The point of having a good team is to trust each other and that person will go and fix the problem so you can just focus on yours.
WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WORK IN STARTUPS?
Sam: I’d say, believe in what you’re building. The excitement of being in a startup is in what you, as a team, are creating and if you don’t care about it you might as well be in a business that pays you!
Adam: I agree, I think that’s quite important to be excited by the vision. It’s essential especially since it’s going to be quite stressful. You’re gonna need persistence to follow through and if you don’t care about what you are creating, you won’t have the persistence you need.
HOW DID YOU FIND LAUNCH22?
Sam: Before coming to Launch22, we were used to working in our lounges or in free workspace and so, the idea of renting something was a bit of a luxury. However, when we actually got some funding, it became one of the first things we were excited to get. We had been looking at loads of places for many months. When we found Launch22 online, we came and had a look. It was really cool and we signed up the same day.
Adam: It’s great really. It’s quite hard to have a separation between work and your private life when you’re starting a business and it quite easily leaks into your free time, your weekends and your Friday nights. By being at Launch22 we have a very nice separation, which has made me a lot happier. It’s only been two weeks but I already feel that the stress level is lower, which is great!
