Eight ways thinking 'crazy' can kickstart your startup!

Hey everybody!

I recently went to the second workshop on the Launch22 Incubator Programme. Tom Previte, from Launch22, led the session, which was about understanding clever and creative ways to generate business solutions. The most memorable of all was the Crazy 8 method.

I split up an A4 sheet of paper into 8 rectangles and sketched 8 business solutions. Tom briefed the cohort that we could draw anything we wanted, even if it was crazy, weird or illogical, but we would only have one minute to sketch each idea.

I was able to come up with 8 places I could potentially sell my beauty products for my beauty startup, Luckyface.

Here's my Crazy 8 example:

Sketch 1 was selling in a kiosk in a shopping centre.

Sketch 2 was selling beauty products in a vending machine.

Sketch 3 was selling in a vintage ice cream style truck

Sketch 4 was selling my products on an app where you can swipe products you like and don't like, then it recommends you a selection of products

Sketch 5 was selling in a physical shop or renting a space in a well-known shop

Sketch 6 was hosting a beauty swap

Sketch 7 was selling on Facebook

Sketch 8 was selling on Instagram with links to our website

It was stressful having to think of one idea per minute but I enjoyed sketching out my 'Crazy 8s'. It really helped me generate some unique ideas that I wouldn't have thought of without the time pressure.

If you're feeling a bit stuck on your business idea, here are 8 reasons why sketching a Crazy 8 could help you too:

1. IT FORCES YOU TO THINK QUICKLY

Usually, I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I always try to think logically through the perfect solution. However, with one minute per sketch, I felt compelled to draw my ideas without overthinking them.

2. IT FORCES YOU TO GIVE 8 SOLUTIONS

The whole purpose of doing Crazy 8s are to pressure yourself into creating with 8 different ideas in 8 minutes. Although, not all the ideas were good, I got my creative juices flowing.

3. IT MAKES YOU THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Most of the time, the brain rejects ideas because we have a filter on. Our brains tell us that our idea is too silly or doesn't make any sense i.e. a vending machine that sells beauty products? The Crazy 8 exercise removes that filter and gives those weird ideas a chance to become solutions.

4. IT IS BETTER THAN WRITING LISTS
My experience of mindmapping has revolved around writing down lists. Visual representations are always more memorable. That's why the Crazy 8 method is a really neat mindmapping method.

5. IT GIVES YOU A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF YOUR IDEAS

Sketching makes you think visually and creatively. Perhaps you cannot picture how your business will work but if you can draw it, people can visually see your sketches and immediately 'get' your idea.

6. IT IS A GOOD WAY TO SHARE IDEAS WITH YOUR TEAM

When it comes to generating ideas, everyone will have their own unique set of ideas and sketches. It was fun to compare sketches with my co-founder Diane too because we both came up with different ideas!

7. IT IS A GREAT SPRINGBOARD FOR MORE IDEAS
When I came up with the ice cream van idea, I generated ideas on other mobile methods of selling beauty products that were not just on the internet or a shop.

8. IT IS AN ENJOYABLE VERSION OF MINDMAPPING
Mindmapping isn't my favourite activity. My brain tends to freeze! The great thing about this method is that it makes mindmapping like a 'game', which is fun.

So that was the business solution session. Thanks for reading!
